Todd Stephens
Nisga’a
- 2008 Vancouver International Airport YVR Art Foundation Scholarship recipient
Todd Stephens’ Nisga’a name is Hlgu Sk’an Milksim Ts’imAks. He was born in Gitlaxdax, B.C., or (Terrace), but grew up in Prince Rupert, B.C. Todd’s interest in his art and culture started at the age of 13 when he was visiting his uncle, Albert Stephens, who was working on a drawing. Todd was also taught his family stories by his maternal great grandmother and grand aunt. He believes this is vital for his art.
In 2004, Todd was commissioned by his art teacher at Prince Rupert Secondary School to make two prints for Japanese teachers who were there on exchange. In May 2008, Todd received a scholarship through the Vancouver International Airport YVR Art Foundation.
“History plays a major role in peoples’ lives. It teaches us what and what not to do. Art can help portray that visually. Our people are a strong nation. I hope to show this in my work as an artist.”
