Rankin Inlet (KANGIQSLINIQ - "a large bay" - pop. 2058) lies on the western shores of Hudson Bay, about 130 miles north of Arviat, in the District of Keewatin. The soapstone of this area is certainly not inspiring in itself, being a dull grey, not unlike that of Arivat and probably of the same strata. Accordingly, the approach to carving here is generally simple, unsophisticated and quite primitive. One can make a generalisation that where the local stone is quite rough and plain, the ensuing work seems to be simple, undetailed, and sometimes more honest than where the stone is beautiful and semiprecious looking.
