Baker Lake (QAMANNI'TUAQ - "a place where the river widens" - pop. 1385), which lies inland from the northwestern shores of Hudson Bay, has a special place in the hearts of collectors of Inuit sculpture. It enjoys an unique reputation for consistent excellence of work, and it radiates an aura of Mecca to its devotees. The reasons for this are both subtle and complex. There are certainly outstanding artists in Baker Lake, and althought it cannot be said that there are better artists here than elsewhere, there are probably more talented carvers per capita than in any other settlement in the north. Secondly, although there is great contrast of individual styles amongst the artists, there is also something intangible which identifies the community. Perhaps the common denominator is a combination of the consistently rounded, ovoid style of work, the generally smooth black stone, and most of all the serious expression fo the carving, where there seldom seems a place for gaiety.

The quality of the available stone inevitabley dictates to some degree the nature of the finished work, and here the local soapstone, which ranges from black to greenish black and into some shades of grey, lends itself well to the direct, powerful style of the artist.
