REFLECTIONSSculpture from the Keewatin

Arviat ("a place of the bowhead whales" - formerly ESKIMO POINT - pop. 1559) is a small settlement which lies on the western shores of Hudson Bay, some two hundred miles north of Churchill. The carving here is unlike any other in the Canadian Arctic. Although the scale of the work is consistently small, it carries a sense of authority and antiquity whick makes it unique. Probably its most distinct characteristic is that it is by far the most primitive carving in the north. The local stone is not exotic and gemlike, but instead is a coarse rough steatite, which lends itself well to the style of the Arviat artists. There is a timelessness about the carving here, so that anyone unfamiliar with Inuit sculpture would probably find it impossible to identify the period or place of origin of a piece from Arviat. The best examples of carving from this community are marvellously direct, simple statements, showing the innate understanding of essential masses, the gift of restraint, and the ability to translate into stone the clear, uncluttered perceptions of the artists.
