“Spirit of the Kakivak”

by

This is the idea of the spirit of the fisherman flowing through the arm into the kakivak. The arm was difficult to carve but I wanted a ghostly surrealistic feeling to the arm. I really wanted the focal point of the sculpture to be the fish on the kakivak and not his arm. The arm and the kakivak are all carved from one piece of antler. The fish is a Brook Trout – a favourite fish delicacy up here in Labrador. This fish is also known as a Speckled Trout and it was the etching of the speckles that took me so much time.
