Killer Whale Clan
Edward Howard Spencer was born in Kitkatla, B.C., and is from the Killer Whale clan in the Tsimshian nation. His heritage is from both Port Simpson and Kitkatla. Edward began painting at the age of 15 and was self-taught. Edward studied artforms from well-known First Nations artists. His first painting of a Raven went to his grandmother, and the first paddle he created went to his grandfather who was also a paddle carver. Edward has perfected and has had commissions worldwide for his paddles. Edward’s biggest commission was to paint the front of a longhouse at Kitkatla, which was first created by Roy Henry Vickers in the early 1970s.
