Simata Killiktee Oonalik was born in Kimmirut. Her father and sister are Lake Harbour artists Ooloopie and Akeego Killiktee. “At that time, there were few houses and many Inuit still lived in tents. Shortly after she was born, the family moved to an outpost camp called Kyudjuaq and, in 1982, moved permanently to Kimmirut. As a young woman, Oonalik began to carve by watching her father as he worked. Oonalik carves a variety of images such as birds, polar bears and seals. Recently, she has begun carving the female form. Many of her pieces are small and intimate and reflect a sensitivity to her materials. Most of her work is completed with her own handmade tools.”*
