The 2014 Cape Dorset Inuit Art Calendar is dedicated to the memory of Canada’s pre-eminent Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak. These 12 beautiful, vibrant and iconic images celebrate Kenojuak’s extraordinary career and contribution to Canadian Art.
From the calendar: “Kenojuak was a working artist, supporting herself and her family entirely on the income earned from her art. This is an extraordinary accomplishment for a woman born in her time and place. Kenojuak’s pleasure in her labour is evident in everything she created, and therein may indeed lie the essence of beauty and the secret to her success. She will be deeply and sincerely missed.”
Cape Dorset, also known as Kinngait (pronounced “King-ite”) for its high, rolling hills, is a thriving Inuit community on the southwest coast of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic territory of Nunavut. The West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative was formed and incorporated there in 1959. The Kinngait Studios, which house the co-operative’s graphic arts program, are the longest continually running print studios in Canada. The studios are internationally renowned for excellence and innovation in Inuit graphic art.
