“Carving this small is always a challenge. The piece of whalebone that I used was given to me two years ago. As soon as I held it I thought it looked like a cliff face and imagined birds on it. I then had an idea in how to prop it up on a serpentine base. It was difficult to carve the tiny bag for the egg collector and even more difficult to carve his tiny fingers. It was almost impossible to carve the eggs and I admit in making them I lost quite a few. I decided to add the woman watching on the base as it needed another person to balance the sculpture.”
