Bull Caribou

“This piece was a real challenge to me. Carving the caribou was probably the most difficult piece of carving that I have ever done. The caribou is made of serpentine, a soft stone that is almost impossible to carve so thin. The legs were so brittle and scary to carve because any vibration of the Foredom could so easily have broken them. This is a big bull caribou with a large rack of anthers on the land. The antlers were also very difficult to carve that small. The land is made from caribou bone attached onto a serpentine base. The porous inner bone on the surface reminds me of the textured lichen surface on the land up here.”
