  • Size: 2.5 × 1.75 inches

“Wheku type mask is a miniature bone carving study of the masters of one of our great carving centres and peoples Te Arawa. Study of various tribal styles is important for commission work i.e. carving for a member of another tribe, as well as some whare whakairo (carved meeting houses) where various tribal ancestors and styles are depicted to help draw connections between visiting groups and the tangata whenua (home tribe). Surface pattern pākati / haehae.”

“I have been fortunate enough to have a supportive family and met many inspiring people in my life who have encouraged me to follow my talents and passion. My father, a woodcarver himself, imparted his knowledge of woodcraft plus provided a creative environment and stories of my great-uncles Pine and John Taiapa, who were Tohunga Whakairo. I have always respected and been inspired by the artistic achievements by indigenous artisans in Aotearoa and throughout the world.”
