Is it possible to create Haida Art without formlines? I had a dream where a beautiful voice spoke to me saying “you are only limited by what you set out to do.”

“Before the Snag” illustrates the loss of Raven’s beak in his encounter with the Blind Halibut Fisherman.

After completing this painting I realized Raven still had his beak in perfect condition, thus the title.

I come from the old school of thought where I feel the art form can only progress from where it left off, at its zenith, in the mid-1800s.

Once I am able to grasp the ideas of the old masters who brought this art form to this level, I am challenged to breathe new life into it.
