“Heru (comb) feature a miniature version of a Pare (lintel). Pare often represents various stages of creation with a central figure and flanking manaia. In between these main figures is piercing representing light entering the world as the primal parents Ko Ranginui raua ko Papatuānuku are separated. Interspersed with this the children of these primal parents, Nga Atua Māori, are shown in various stages of formation. This piece is made from Hihi Parāoa (Sperm Whale) jawbone where it spreads out into a very thin section.”
“I have been fortunate enough to have a supportive family and met many inspiring people in my life who have encouraged me to follow my talents and passion. My father, a woodcarver himself, imparted his knowledge of woodcraft plus provided a creative environment and stories of my great-uncles Pine and John Taiapa, who were Tohunga Whakairo. I have always respected and been inspired by the artistic achievements by indigenous artisans in Aotearoa and throughout the world.”
