“Stylized figure in the style of Te Taihauāuru (West coast). As a carver at times it is necessary to study and carve the other regional styles, not only ones own heritage—for example in commission work for members of another iwi (tribe) or in a whare whakairo (carved house) where the various iwi are represented. This piece is fully carved on both sides and can be worn upright, upside down, sideways or from any of the piercing holes, by changing the cord placement. At times one of the hardest aspects of carving a pendant is where to place the hole for the suspension cord.”

“I have been fortunate enough to have a supportive family and met many inspiring people in my life who have encouraged me to follow my talents and passion. My father, a woodcarver himself, imparted his knowledge of woodcraft plus provided a creative environment and stories of my great-uncles Pine and John Taiapa, who were Tohunga Whakairo. I have always respected and been inspired by the artistic achievements by indigenous artisans in Aotearoa and throughout the world.”
