Honouring Northwest Coast Moon Mother – Whale Migrations

  • Medium: acrylic on canvas
  • Size: 16 × 16 inches
    Size: 18.5 × 18.5 inches (framed)
  • Reference Code: KX101011

“This painting is an acknowledgment and honouring of the Northwest Coast Moon Mother, with symbols relating to our (joint) whaling traditions and how important the whales are in our histories—it also gives us a very tangible link—their whales come down here to the South Pacific and return home past their territories on their migrations back to northern waters. The Moon Mother wears symbols of leadership and wisdom, eagles on her brow and an owl on her chin. Our Ta Moko (tattoos) also depicts birds on the faces of our leaders.”

June graduated from the Waiariki Polytechnic in Rotorua with a Diploma of Craft Design in 1989. Inspired by her ancestors and their art, she continues the tradition for the future generations of her family. Her work is often interwoven with powerful figures and stories from her tribal histories. She says, “Each time I paint the story of one amazing tupuna (ancestor), another comes to light with yet another fascinating contribution to the histories of the tribe.”
