“Pipi Shuffle” (Clam or Cockle Shuffle)

Māori Performer and Entertainer series

“With these works I’ve been inspired by the small prehistoric venus figurines that were mostly found in Europe. They were based on the female form with exaggerated and stylised features and were fashioned from stone, ivory bone or ceramic. There are various interpretations for these venus figurines including symbols of fertility or representative of goddess deities however their true purpose and meanings still remain a mystery.”

“Using a similar scale and principles I’ve created my own little venus figurines based on female and matriarchal type characters and also iconic Maori/Polynesian women I’m familiar with.”

“With my work I am influenced by the design principles and elements of the various Māori artforms, both traditional and contemporary. They are what make them uniquely identifiable as being Māori, and it is what I hope to portray in my own work.”
