Lukta Qiatsuk

Cape Dorset, Nunavut Territory, Canada

Lukta and his father, Kiakshuk, were both featured in the famous “Sculpture/Inuit. Sculpture of the Inuit: Masterworks of the Canadian Arctic” touring exhibition (1971-73). His sister, the graphic artist Paunichea, is the mother of Aqjangajuk Shaa. Lukta’s three sons are also strong and innovative carvers. [Padlaya Qiatsuk, Pootoogook Qiatsuk] Since the 1950s, Lukta has been an important figure in the art of Cape Dorset, gaining recognition as a sculptor, a graphic artist and a printmaker (he trained in the beginning days in 1957-58). He was the main printer for more than two hundred graphics, including a good number of the most highly esteemed images. As a sculptor, he likes both figurative and wildlife subjects, and has an interest in birds, particularly owls.
