Spirit of the Sea Miniature Mask

by

“This series of masks was inspired by the Yup’ik style masks from Alaska that I have studied in books. These have no relevance to the art and culture of Labrador but, it is more that I have always been intrigued in their shamanic element and the transformational imagery portrayed in their designs. I decided to do this series honouring the spirits of the land, sky and sea, using three different materials for the faces and a variety of inlays and decoration relating to these three worlds. The hoops surrounding the masks represent the spirit worlds. The three masks challenged me with their complicated designs and intricate inlays.”
