Disgruntled Watchman Spoon

The story behind this piece is about the end of my career as a watchman. I have spent the last ten years of my life working as a watchman in the ancient Haida Village sites in the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, on Haida Gwaii. I have spent years studying the works of the old Haida masters that still stand in these village sites today. It has been an honor and a privilege to work in the villages of my ancestors, but my life had to take a turn in an other direction — particularly towards art.

The watchman figure represents the last few years of my life that I had spent in the villages of my ancestors. The raven figure has an abstracted killerwhale crest on the wings, to represent myself, coming from the Raven/Killerwhale clan of Naikoon.

Although my career as a watchman is now over, I will always love and cherish the villages of my ancestors that I used to protect.
