Arctic Eclipse (1999) [AP]

  • Medium: serigraph
  • Size: 33.75 × 29.75 inches
  • Edition: 5 (Artist Proof)
  • Reference Code: SP1999-01A

The spindle whorl is a disc which acted as a flywheel on the spinning device used for making wool yarn. Many spindle whorls, which could be oval, soft-squared or circular, had very complex designs carved on either one or both sides. The circular spindle whorl format is representative of the circle of life.

This image was inspired by a story I read about an albino or white raven that became resident in a small town in northern British Columbia. There are a few recorded cases of albinos in different animal groups such as bear, bison, and raven; therefore natives have been attached to some. This print honours nature’s way of surprising us with its exciting phenomenon.

Coast Salish (Musqueam)

(1952- )

Susan began making limited edition prints on her kitchen table in 1981 while working as a legal secretary. She received several early commissions, which established her reputation for innovative proposals and for completing projects on time, on budget and at the highest level. She took courses in silver, casting and carving, all of which led to monumental sculptures in mixed media, and she was the first Northwest Coast artist to work in glass. She continues to release a number of print editions each year, but her focus has been on commissioned sculpture.
