Matuku Moana • Reef Heron

An uncommon native, the slim, bluish grey plumaged Reef Heron frequents mangrove flats mainly in the north of the North Island of New Zealand.

Related to the recent arrival, the graceful White-Faced Heron from Australia, the Reef Heron with its shorter legs and its hunched, almost horizontal feeding stance, is nevertheless a very shapely, attractive bird.

Rather shy and much less adaptable than the aggressive White-Faced Heron, the Reef Heron is slowly being pushed aside and becoming scarce. Fortunately, it is now found in parts of Australia and Southeast Asia.
