Titipounamu • New Zealand Riflemen

by

SOLD

New Zealand’s smallest bird (3¼ inches), Titipounamu is a forest dweller found in both the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Survivors from pre-glacial times, Titipounamu are found only in New Zealand and are thought to be related to the Pittas, a group of insect- eating forest dwellers that live in the tropics of the Old World. This little bird has a high pitched cricket-like call that is a real test for the human ear. The European name, Rifleman, was created by English settlers due to the bird’s dark plumage being the same colour as the uniform coat of the early New Zealand militia.
