“For quite some time now I have had the urge to carve a piece with traditional tattooing on a woman’s face, however I first had to figure out how to carve the tattoo lines into the white alabaster while still keeping them visible, so I decided to fill the lines with ink similar to scrimshaw done on many ivory pieces. Traditionally tattooing was done by passing a needle and thread through soot and then weaving the needle through the skin, so the idea of mixing oil and soot to make the ink seemed fitting for the piece. I had placed the faces in the hood facing each other in order to show the bond between the mother and child, which is also visible through the mother’s warming smile and the look of content on the sleeping child’s face.”
