Aronui • Triangle Pattern Pendant

by

  • Medium: pounamu (New Zealand jade)
  • Size: 1.25 × 2 inches
  • Reference Code: NZ70924

“This pendant is inspired by the taniko (fine weaving) pattern based on the triangle called Aronui or Aonui. The overall triangle shape is derived from a type of woven maro (apron) worn by women, symbolising the female element. This shape and the triangle patterns speak of a connection to weaving, to feminine arts, to Papatuanuku (Earth mother) and fertility of both the land itself and of women.”

“I have been fortunate enough to have a supportive family and met many inspiring people in my life who have encouraged me to follow my talents and passion. My father, a woodcarver himself, imparted his knowledge of woodcraft plus provided a creative environment and stories of my great-uncles Pine and John Taiapa, who were Tohunga Whakairo. I have always respected and been inspired by the artistic achievements by indigenous artisans in Aotearoa and throughout the world.”
