Killerwhale Crest Staff

by

Crest staffs represent the host family, support the orator, and heighten the visual effect and impact of the ceremonies. Staffs work together with other objects to help convey the monumentality of family lineage when making public presentations or at a potlatch.

Killer whales have been feared, respected and revered by the Tlingit. It was said that seal hunters would beckon the whales to chase the seals toward them, which they did and this earned their reputation for being friends of human beings.

Preston was born in San Francisco, California, in 1963. In 1984, he began his studies at the prestigious Pilchuck Glass school in Stanwood, Washington. Today, he remains connected to the school as both a sessional instructor and a board member, while pursing his own very successful career as an artist. Pilchuck has always fostered a milieu open to new ideas that has drawn many of the most promising students, as well as established working glass-artists, to the Pacific Northwest Coast.
