I believe that the right to the use of certain patterns was passed on through families, and I believe that I am entitled to weave the Dragonfly pattern because all the hats that I have seen in museums across North America that were created by my great-grandmother were woven in variations of this particular pattern. This leads me to believe that woven designs were like crests; they were recognized as belonging to a particular family.
