A musical instrument called the pumotomoto informs this work. Pumotomoto translates as “the fontanelle” In old times when a baby was born, the tohunga would play over the area of the child’s fontanelle. This was a transmission of generational knowledge through the medium of sound. As my partner and I are to become parents, I am interested in the sounds our baby can hear while inside the wharetangata (womb).
