Māui is a strong innovative character in traditional Māori story narratives. His adventures and accomplishments, when told in story form, act as metaphors for real events and knowledge of importance in Māori culture. The telling of these narratives in story form ensures this knowledge of importance is retained and not lost.

One narrative credits Māui with fishing up the North Island of New Zealand (Te Ika a Māui), having fashioned a fishing hook from the jawbone of his ancestor. This metaphor relates to the event of the islands of New Zealand seemingly rising up out of the sea from over the horizon as the great sea-going canoes of the Māori Polynesian forebearers approached. This stone piece reflects on these stories of navigation and discovery.
