“For his 1972 Christmas card, Davidson used an idea from a silver bracelet he had made and which in turn had been inspired by an unusual bentwood box. He remembered the box for its unorthodox top edge, where a form line usually defines the extent of the head. Neither box, bracelet nor card represents a particular creature.
“In the bracelet design, Davidson used the teeth of the uppermost face as a substitute for the missing form line. For the card he extended the design downwards with a hand, because it fitted so well. He then doubled the image to give it that much revered characteristic of Haida art: symmetry.”
