“This piece is a tribute to Ngā Mana Waahine (women) of Ngāti Porou and inspired by the work of renowned tohunga whakairo (master carver) Hone Ngātoto (d.1927) of the Ngāti Porou. Ngātoto had a distinctive style and worked on many carved houses in the Ngāti Porou region in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Elements of his work are said to be influenced by classical Greek sculpture as can be seen in the amo figures (front house posts) in the carved ancestral whare (house) Rongomaianiwaniwa at Tikitiki.”

“I have been fortunate enough to have a supportive family and met many inspiring people in my life who have encouraged me to follow my talents and passion. My father, a woodcarver himself, imparted his knowledge of woodcraft plus provided a creative environment and stories of my great-uncles Pine and John Taiapa, who were Tohunga Whakairo. I have always respected and been inspired by the artistic achievements by indigenous artisans in Aotearoa and throughout the world.”
