“Colourful Amouti”

by

SOLD

“This is my first time carving an amauti hood in Labradorite. This proved to be far more harder to make than I thought. Labradorite fractures so easily on carving and is also so difficult to polish. It is too easy to burn the stone if using the electric polishing pads for too long but it is necessary as it is the polishing that brings out the natural beautiful colours in Labradorite. I did most of the polishing by hand as it is safer but it just takes so much longer than polishing serpentine. The face is made from wooly mammoth ivory gifted to me by a Russian geologist, Alex Kuznetsov, in Iceland in 2015 and the black marble by an artist on my visit to Kimmirut in 2016”.
