The Assassin • The Barn Owl

2nd Carving /Sculpture - Open in New Zealand National Woodskills Competition in Kawerau on 24 September 2015

Inhabiting open country the Barn Owl is the world’s most widespread owl occurring almost worldwide. A large, pale buff and white plumaged owl is readily identifiable with its mournful, heart-shaped white facial disc.

A silent flyer, the Barn Owl is a night hunter preying on large insects, even hares and rabbits. To manage this is in the dark it has developed a unique hearing ability, which enables it to hunt by sound alone. Nesting is in unused and derelict buildings, the Barn Owl with its silent flight and eerie rasping screech has prompted many haunted house tales.
