I’ve seen a few carvings where there is an animal or spirit half-in or half-out of the water. With this serpentine piece I could see a face at the end from the very start. So, I decided to make it a Sedna. She peers out from the surface, looking at the land dwellers, remembering…remembering…what it was like to live up there. She prefers the water.

Massie’s work is a reflection of his mixed Inuit, Métis and Scottish heritage. In it, he investigates both traditional and contemporary themes. Massie has been twice short-listed for the coveted Prix Saidye Bronfman and has an extensive international reputation. His work has been shown in North America and Europe, including the National Gallery of Canada. He was elected a member of Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2011.
