“The pekapeka design is based on the native bat form. In this case I have portrayed them as two manaia (guardian) design representing male and female. The piece is about the unity of whānau (family). The flowing and fluid design of the manaia influences a lot of my work”.
Thomas has worked with Māori jade artist Lewis Gardiner since 2004 and has developed his own style in bone, wood and jade. Thomas’ work was included in the Spirit Wrestler Gallery’s Kaitiaki—Guardians and Mini-Masterworks exhibitions.
