Rongoueroa was of the ancient pre-canoe people. She was the matriarch of my mother’s Atiawa tribe. Today we have intermarried on a larger scale and this painting is inspired by my grandson, Lucius Dean, a seven year old who is part Maori, Irish, English, Scottish and French. He belongs to the Maori world but also the rest of the world.
