“This was a fun piece to make and tested my skills in carving the antler so thin. I had so little antler to work with so I had to enhance it with intricate detailing to make it more interesting. It is all in the detailing, the thin fingers with wrinkles and fingernails, the gap between the legs, the creases in the pants and in the parka jacket and the facial features. I also especially took time to carve around the sleeves and hood to give the piece more depth and emphasize the face and hands. The other difficult part was carving the ripples around the rim of the drum and making it look like soft skin. It was also tricky fitting the drum into the hand. I did not want to drill a hole through the hand as I wanted the drum to be held properly so I had to find the the centre of gravity to balance it and make it secure with a friction fit.”
