“Samuel Nahaulaituq has carved the stone and whalebone of the Boothia Peninsula for twenty years but didn’t begin to work continuously as a sculptor until 1972. This was the year he and his family settled into a permanent home in Spence Bay [Taloyoak]—one of the last families to do so. … Human figures, spirits, muskoxen, bears and birds—the range of Nahaulaituq’s subjects seems endless. Animal carvings, usually quite realistic, often exhibit some physical feature that is slightly out of the ordinary, such as a dog with ears laid back and growling, or a bear with no ears that vaguely resembles a seal.”
