“Wheku type mask is a miniature bone carving study of the masters of one of our great carving centres and peoples Te Arawa. Study of various tribal styles is important for commission work i.e. carving for a member of another tribe, as well as some whare whakairo (carved meeting houses) where various tribal ancestors and styles are depicted to help draw connections between visiting groups and the tangata whenua (home tribe). Surface pattern pākati / haehae.”
