“In Northwest Coast societies, entitlement to the use of a given crest had to be inherited or conferred by ceremony. Boxes were usually not decorated with easily identifiable crests, possibly so that they could be traded to or inherited by anyone.

“Davidson’s box, however, features Wolf. The front of the box depicts the head of the animal with eyes in large ovoids, a nose between, a mouth with large teeth, and ears extending up into the corners…

“These prints, which originated with a silver box the artist made while studying silver work under the supervision of Bill Reid, are unusual in that the form lines are in red rather than in the customary black of painted box designs.”
