“I once read a tragic newspaper story about a young couple who perished in a boating mishap and it reminded me of an old Haida belief. It is said that the souls of drowning victims become killer whales in the afterlife. The image of the two souls travelling together, beyond this life, is the subject of this print. The pattern in the water is stylized hu, pronounced ‘hue’. It is an ancient name for god and is the sound that I first became familiar with during a near death experience as a child.”
