Louisa Inukpuk

Inuit

Umiujaq, Quebec, Canada

(1940- )

Louisa Inukpuk was born in Tikiraujaaq near Kuujjuaraapik, and moved to Umiujaq in 1986. She learned to carve in 1958 and enjoyed making carvings of seals out of soapstone; another one of her favourite subjects was people. Because the soft soapstone is no longer available Louisa now prefers making kamiks, parkas and mitts. Louisa feels Inuit art is a reflection of her people, therefore her art serves a good purpose in that the younger generation can learn about their own culture through this medium. Besides being a crafts artist Louisa is also employed by the Kativik School Board as an Inuk teacher. Her only son is Umiujaq sculptor Phillip Inukpuk.
