Fluid Dancer

by

SOLD

“When I found the stone for this piece, I immediately fell in love with the veining and knew the carved shape of the piece had to accentuate this attribute. I found a sketch that I drew late one night, and decided this is what I should sculpt. First I sculpted the dancer and next the base. The texturing on the base reminds me of lichen (a moss which covers the ground in the north), which is a major food source for many northern animals. My original plan was to carve the dancer’s face with his eyes wide open and full of glee, but the more I looked at the fluid movements of his body, the more I realized he should have an expression of serenity. When looking at this piece his expression puts me at ease.”

My interest in art started at a very early age. As soon as I was old enough to hold a pencil I would draw for hours on end. When I was finished I would show the drawing to my mother. Rather than telling me it was perfect she’d say, “It’s very good, but if you made a few changes it could be even better,” and she was right.
