The Spirit Wrestler Gallery is pleased to celebrate the 60th birthday of Robert Davidson with the release of two new limited edition serigraph prints.

In 2006, the work of Robert Davidson has been showcased in two major exhibitions, The Abstract Edge, hosted by the UBC Museum of Anthropology which has traveled nationally with the final venue at The National Gallery of Canada, due to open in February 2007; and also in the Raven Travelling—Two Hundred Years of Haida Art at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Split U and Entitlement are both images from the paintings included in The Abstract Edge exhibition. The Abstract Edge focuses on the artist’s intuitive understanding and powerful interpretation of Haida form and design. Sculptural pieces, paintings and drums, many produced specifically for this exhibition, capture his artistic vision and design sensibility that has been constantly evolving over a career of more than forty years.

Raven Travelling—Two Hundred Years of Haida Art traced the development of Haida art over many generations of artists. Davidson’s work was prominently featured and served as a statement on the strengths and dedication of the current generation of artists and their commitment to building a cultural foundation for the future.

Over his long career, Robert has received every major award that can be bestowed on a Canadian artist including the Companion to the Order of Canada, the Order of British Columbia, and election to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, as well as receiving the Life-Time achievement award from the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation.

At 60, Robert Davidson has chosen to dedicate more time to teaching in order to inspire the next generation of artists to pursue excellence and personal creativity—this comes at a time when time is very precious as major commissions for totem poles and personal projects have him committed for more than the next three years. He remains a life-time student to the possibilities of Haida form and design which continues to excite and challenge his imagination.

The gallery staff has been privileged to represent the work of Robert Davidson for more than two decades. We are pleased to celebrate the life and career to date of one of Canada’s foremost artists on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
