“For most of us, our mothers would do anything to protect us and this piece is for all those mothers who have had to protect their children from harm. This mother owl has that look and gesture of the length that she will go to. Standing in front of the owlets, she is the defensive wall, while they are back to back with hersort of keeping on eye on each other’s backs!
“It is the strength of that maternal support and determination that allows us to build ourselves as childrenand the expressions of all here suggest that each has their own outlook on the matter and that each views it from a different perspective. So basically, this piece is of a situation taking place and these are their reactions.”
Massie’s work is a reflection of his mixed Inuit, Métis and Scottish heritage. In it, he investigates both traditional and contemporary themes. He has achieved renown for his innovative teapots that combine themes and symbols from his native Inuit culture with European traditions. Massie has been twice short-listed for the coveted Prix Saidye Bronfman and has an extensive international reputation. His work has been shown in North America and Europe, including the National Gallery of Canada. He was elected a member of Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2011.
