I really had fun carving this piece during my stay in Vancouver. I used all the natural colours within the mammoth ivory by leaving the dark colour in the back for the parka so that it did not distract from the detailing on the front. The white in the ivory helped define and highlight the faces of the mother and child. The real time taken was on the fine intricate detail carving on the faces, the fur on the collar of the parka, the creases and stitches on the kamiks, the fringes on the parka, and their hair, especially Mum’s braids. The oval design on the front of the parka is a very traditional to parka in Labrador.
