“The painting Hinerangi was based on my sculpture at our national war memorial similarly called “Hinerangi’. Hinerangi is the woman who sees all life on this planet earth, the joy, the sorrow, success and failure, birth and death. She is a witness to all aspects of life and I designed a bronze sculpture of her dressed in a cloak with her face being a cloud in the sky. This painting gives her a face of a woman at peace with herself who accepts the irrationality of life as it evolves on this earth. Life has its beauty and joy but also its tragedy and sadness”.
