“I was approached by a Tahitian woman who was visiting New Zealand. She arrived at my house with about nine other people and ushered them to the bottom lounge of my house where she discussed my art with me. She explained that she had watched my art for several years and described this image of a spirit in the form of a woman with red hair who controlled fire and the rising and setting sun. We have a similar belief in a spirit called Mahuika.

Tahitians who are suffering certain illnesses go down to the sea either in the morning or in the evening and chant prayers to heal the sick while the sun rises or sets. Many other cultures believe in the power of the sun to heal. This painting was inspired by her visit”.
