This piece was inspired by the summer visit of my daughter Chloe to Labrador. It was wonderful to have her stay with me and to have her help me with the sanding on this sculpture. The face is in carrara marble which is my favourite stone for carving portrait faces. The level of difficulty is always in the fine detailing. It takes me so much time to carve the delicate braids and then there are the many hours of texturing and smoothing on the face. I do not like having the shiny polished finish but prefer the matt finish as this gives the face a softer look and helps highlight the facial features.—Billy Gauthier
