Rex Homan is a Māori artist, renowned for his delicate sculptural birds in native timbers from Aotearoa (New Zealand). His depth of knowledge on the subject is instantly recognizable in the detail and character that he portrays with each bird. He has been a contemporary woodcarver for over forty years and is recognized throughout New Zealand, winning many awards for his art. Although Rex has his own unique personal style, he is the first to admit that his work is not traditional but incorporates Māori myths and legends, as well as elements of Māori design.
This exhibition represents his vision on the many significant birds that are indigenous to New Zealand, respected by Māori and renowned to ornithologists around the world. The collection reveals birds that are kaitiaki (guardian) birds to Māori or to the many birds that are sadly extinct or threatened by shoreline development, destruction of wetlands, insecticides, hunting or by the accidental introduction of non-indigenous mammals from overseas. His voice expresses his concern for not just the birds of New Zealand but for the many birds around the world facing similar fates. This is an exhibition not to be missed and an opportunity to meet and talk to the artist who will be in attendance.
