Rei Puta • Whale Tooth Pendant

by

  • Medium: bone, pāua (New Zealand abalone)
  • Size: 3.5 × 1.5 inches
  • Reference Code: K101102

“This piece is an adaption of the classical Rei Puta shape. Literally, Rei Puta translates as “Treasured Opening”. Little is known of the true meanings invested in the old pieces; however what is known is that they were a way of transferring intergenerational knowledge, genealogical connections passed from parent to child. My version pays homage to the sea kings of the 1300s and their companions, the whales and the sea birds.”
